About The Role and Team

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to be an early employee at a start-up shaping the future of quantum computing, and in particular to form a new team within the company. There are vast opportunities for professional growth and to make an impact within the company. 

This role will suit an experienced Layout Engineer wanting to apply their knowledge to the exciting area of quantum computing, by contributing to the design of scalable layout routines for large-scale quantum processors based on silicon technology. No quantum experience required.

As a Layout Engineer, you will be responsible for leading the implementation of physical layouts for silicon-based quantum processors made using a custom CMOS process. You will implement quantum dot structures which have been designed by specialists in the team, and design appropriate fan-out for optimised performance.

You will also act as a key stakeholder for evolving our design strategy, such as advising on and introducing scalable infrastructure, as well as implementing parameterised models, automated layout, and verification routines. As such, this role requires initiative, flexibility, and adaptability to tasks at hand.

Our team of 40+ is based in Oxford and London, with a centre of mass in our Islington lab and office.

Functions of the Role
  • Work closely with the Quantum Hardware Design Leads to deliver custom chip layouts, including routing and optimisation, from concept definition to tapeout.

  • Advise, evolve, and implement an early-stage, bespoke design and layout strategy, such as developing:

    • Custom layout programmable cells (PCells).

    • Automated layout and verification routines.

    • Reusable, modular, hierarchical layout.

  • Verify chip layouts against DRC and LVS.

  • Provide and maintain layout schedule in coordination with Design Leads and Project Managers.

  • Document own work and perform layout reviews with other team members.

Experience - Essentials
  • Degree, or equivalent professional experience, in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or related field

  • 3+ years experience in custom, hierarchical layout

  • Proficiency with software for layout design, such as KLayout and/or Cadence Virtuoso Layout Suite (X)L

  • Proficiency in DRC & LVS with Calibre or a similar tool

  • Demonstrated layout experience in deep sub-micron processes

  • Preference for fast-paced, scaleup environment

  • Quick learner, self-driven

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Experience - Desirable
  • Proficiency in scripting or programming, preferably SKILL and Python

  • Experience with use and development of automatic routing tools

  • Knowledge of optical mask layout and e-beam lithography

  • Knowledge of sub-micron fabrication processes

  • Familiarity with layout-dependent effects (LOD, WPE, OSE, etc.)

  • Experience in package design an/or in PCB design
